Biosafety Cabinet Testing & Certification

Professional testing, certification, and recertification of Biological Safety Cabinets (BSCs) for pharmaceutical, biotechnology, research, healthcare, and controlled laboratory environments.

SOKOL GxP Services helps organizations verify critical cabinet performance and maintain safe, compliant operations. Our field testing evaluates airflow performance, HEPA filter integrity, containment, alarms, and other critical operating parameters while providing clear, traceable certification documentation.

Services can support newly installed cabinets, routine recertification, equipment relocation, maintenance activities, HEPA filter replacement, troubleshooting, and broader facility qualification programs.

Why BSC Certification Matters

Biological Safety Cabinets are primary engineering controls designed to provide personnel, product, and environmental protection. Their effectiveness depends on properly balanced airflow, functional HEPA filtration, appropriate installation, and reliable operation of critical cabinet components.

Routine testing and certification provide documented evidence that the cabinet continues to perform as intended. Certification can also identify airflow deficiencies, filter leaks, alarm issues, or other conditions that may compromise containment before they affect personnel, products, or laboratory operations.

BSCs should be evaluated following installation or relocation and after maintenance or modifications that may affect cabinet performance. Periodic recertification is also an important part of maintaining continued performance and compliance with applicable requirements.

Our certification services help organizations:

Verify personnel, product, and environmental protection

Identify airflow or containment deficiencies

Support equipment qualification and change control

Confirm inflow and downflow performance

Confirm proper installation and critical alarm operation

Maintain compliance with applicable standards and site requirements

Verify HEPA filter integrity

Maintain traceable certification records

Confirm inflow and downflow performance

Verify personnel, product, and environmental protection

Verify HEPA filter integrity

Identify airflow or containment deficiencies

Confirm proper installation and critical alarm operation

Maintain traceable certification records

Support equipment qualification and change control

Maintain compliance with applicable standards and site requirements

Inflow velocity measurement — verifies appropriate inward airflow for personnel and environmental protection

Downflow velocity measurement — verifies uniform downward airflow within the cabinet work zone

HEPA filter integrity testing — identifies filter or seal leakage that may compromise filtration performance

Airflow smoke pattern testing — visually verifies airflow direction, containment, and work-zone airflow behavior

Site installation assessment — evaluates cabinet installation and surrounding conditions that may affect performance

Alarm and interlock verification — confirms operation of applicable airflow alarms and critical safety functions

Our BSC Certification Services

SOKOL GxP Services provides comprehensive on-site BSC testing and certification tailored to cabinet type, intended use, applicable requirements, and your facility's quality system.

Our team can support individual cabinets, laboratory suites, and facility-wide certification programs, including initial certification, routine recertification, post-maintenance testing, and troubleshooting.

Primary Certification Testing

Depending on cabinet type, configuration, manufacturer requirements, and applicable standard, certification testing may include:

Inflow velocity measurement — verifies appropriate inward airflow for personnel and environmental protection

HEPA filter integrity testing — identifies filter or seal leakage that may compromise filtration performance

Site installation assessment — evaluates cabinet installation and surrounding conditions that may affect performance

Downflow velocity measurement — verifies uniform downward airflow within the cabinet work zone

Airflow smoke pattern testing — visually verifies airflow direction, containment, and work-zone airflow behavior

Alarm and interlock verification — confirms operation of applicable airflow alarms and critical safety functions

Additional Performance Testing

Additional testing can be incorporated based on cabinet configuration, application, facility requirements, or troubleshooting needs:

Certification & Recertification Support

BSC certification is not limited to annual testing. Cabinet performance should be evaluated throughout the equipment lifecycle whenever conditions arise that could affect containment or airflow performance.

Certification may be appropriate:

Upon initial installation

Following maintenance or repairs affecting airflow

When containment or performance concerns are identified

As part of scheduled periodic recertification

After blower or airflow adjustments

Following other changes that could affect cabinet performance

Following cabinet relocation

Following changes to the facility exhaust or HVAC interface

After HEPA filter replacement

Certification frequency and test scope should be determined based on the applicable standard, cabinet type, manufacturer recommendations, intended use, facility requirements, and applicable regulatory expectations.

Enhanced BSC Airflow Visualization

When certification testing alone does not provide sufficient insight into airflow behavior, SOKOL can perform enhanced Airflow Visualization Studies (AVS) to evaluate cabinet performance under representative operating conditions.

Unlike a basic certification smoke pattern test, an enhanced AVS can evaluate how airflow responds to actual work practices, equipment placement, material transfers, and operator interventions.

Applications include:

Personnel protection visualization

Material loading and unloading assessments

Multi-camera video documentation of airflow behavior

Product protection studies

Sash position impact studies

Operator intervention assessments

Turbulence and reflux identification

Equipment placement and obstruction studies

Workflow optimization assessments

This integrated approach allows organizations to move beyond confirming that a cabinet passes certification requirements and better understand how the cabinet performs during actual use.
